PROJECT: Sandema Girls Leadership Project
CLIENT: Operation Groundswell [Canada]
LOCATION: Sandema, Upper East Region, Ghana
DURATION: June - July 2010
During the months of June and July 2010, our client, Operation Groundswell presented a project challenge. OG's girls leadership project in Sandema was facing sustainability challenges and our solutions were needed. We were rather excited about this job as its very nature employed all elements of our expertise.
We researched the project and discovered that not only was it facing sustainability challenges, but the project also needed a scheme, structure and strategy.
What OG sought to do among girls in Sandema:
Identify, train and support young female leaders from Sandema Community to guide the girls leadership project's activities.
Why the girls leadership program is needed in Sandema:
Girls in Sandema generally face challenges like early school dropout, limited opportunities to build vocational and productive skills, heavy domestic and productive work burden, early marriage, decreased peer and social networks, increased risk of gender violence and insecurity and poor reproductive health outcomes among others. These challenges have made a girls leadership project aimed at providing them with life enhancing skills necessary.
The Project's Impact:
OG's project aims to create, among others, a safe public space for girls in Sandema;a larger and stronger peer network for the girls; positive role models and mentors; opportunities to learn new knowledge and skills; and also create and execute life plans.
McBryce Consultancy's Solutions
Our proposed solutions on scheme, structure, strategy and sustainability perfectly suited the projects' needs. Instead of the usual top-down approach to leadership we encouraged : An Exchange Experience in Transformational Leadership for Girls.
We also provided a structure for initiating and executing leadership activities as well as tailor made leadership activities for both the OG Girl Leaders and the Sandema Girls. We were happy to observe OG Girls execute our solutions after our workshop sessions and their positive effect on both the Sandema Girls and the OG Girls.
By the time we left Sandema, our solutions had provided a solid sustainability for OG's Sandema girls leadership project, a job for an unemployed young, inspiring woman of Sandema and a sustained progressive peer group for young girls in Sandema. Our work with OG in Sandema was overall a rewarding experience for us, Sandema Girls and Operation Groundswell's West Africa Discovery Group of 2010.
